How to Track Airline and Hotel Points Expiration

Build a reliable record of loyalty balances, qualifying activity, and expiration rules without relying on memory.

Start with the program rule, not a generic date

Loyalty programs use different systems. Some balances do not expire while an account remains open and in good standing. Others expire after a fixed period with no qualifying activity, and a few use a hard date that activity cannot extend. Record the rule source and the date it was checked because programs can change their terms.

A bank card’s expiration date is unrelated to loyalty-point expiration. Closing a co-branded card also does not always erase airline or hotel points, because those balances usually live in the loyalty account. Bank-issued flexible points can follow different rules.

Define qualifying activity

Do not assume every account event resets the clock. Earning from a flight, hotel stay, credit-card purchase, shopping portal, dining program, transfer, or partner may qualify differently. Redemptions sometimes count as activity and sometimes do not. Transfers can also be irreversible, so verify before moving points only to prevent expiration.

Track the posting date

The date of a purchase, flight, or transfer may differ from the date the activity posts to the loyalty account. Use the posted activity shown by the program when possible. If points fail to post, keep the receipt and resolve the discrepancy while documentation is still easy to find.

After taking an action intended to extend validity, verify that the account displays the new activity and, if the program shows one, the updated expiration date. A pending partner transaction is not a dependable safeguard.

Use reminders that leave recovery time

A reminder on the final day is too late for most partner activity. Create an early checkpoint several months ahead for valuable balances and a nearer reminder to verify posting. The larger and less replaceable the balance, the more lead time it deserves.

For programs with no expiration, still record the last activity date. Accounts can be closed for inactivity or affected by policy changes even when the points themselves are described as non-expiring.

Review before closing a card

Before closing or product-changing a card, identify which rewards sit in a separate airline or hotel account and which remain in an issuer-controlled account. Confirm whether another active card is needed to keep transferable points, whether a downgrade preserves them, and whether transfers or redemptions must happen first.
